BA in Theatre
Fordham University — Bronx, NY
About this program
The Fordham University Theatre Programme is 'highly regarded as one of the most outstanding BA theatre training programs in the country.' It 'combines the intimacy of a small conservatory with an exceptional liberal arts education, and the rich resources and opportunities available in the world capital of the performing arts.' LOCATION: 60th Street and Columbus Avenue, Lincoln Center, Manhattan — within walking distance of the Broadway and Off-Broadway theatre districts. 8 miles from Fordham's Rose Hill campus (Bronx); connected by Ram Van shuttle. PROGRAM DIRECTOR: May Adrales — award-winning director and artistic leader. Faculty members are working theatre professionals. FOUR CONCENTRATIONS: 1. PERFORMANCE: Rigorous training in acting, text analysis, vocal technique, and movement. 2. DESIGN AND PRODUCTION (D&P): Dynamic concentrations in Set Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Projection Design, Sound Design, and Stage Management. 3. PLAYWRITING: A diverse community of writers developing their craft and exploring their individual voice. 4. DIRECTING: Multidisciplinary training and experiential learning; students emphasize collaboration as storytellers and innovators. PRODUCTION SEASON: Four MainStage productions per year — directed and designed by full-time faculty and guests from the professional NYC theatre community. Sixteen to eighteen Studio Theatre productions per year — completely student-driven (playwriting and directing projects with support of outside professional directors/mentors). Each spring: Design Showcase for senior designers and stage managers; Performance Showcase for senior actors. PRACTICUM REQUIREMENT: All Theatre majors must complete five semesters of THEA 1000 Theatre Practicum (pass/fail) — practical experience and skill development. SENIOR AUDITION SEQUENCE: THEA 4400 Senior Audition I and THEA 4410 Senior Audition II (successful completion counts as one course toward graduation requirements). SOCIAL MISSION: 'As a program centered on the values of social justice and responsibility, we aim to serve our greater global community as citizen artists, using theatrical expression to create paths for empathy, understanding and dialogue.' CONCENTRATION FLEXIBILITY: 'While you may be accepted into the program through one Concentration, there is no obligation for you to remain in that Concentration. Many students learn during their education that they prefer another Concentration over the one they were accepted into the program with.' CREATIVE PRODUCING COURSE: Joint effort between program director May Adrales and John Johnson (programme alumnus and Broadway producer; Tony Award-winning credits include Hello Dolly!, A Raisin in the Sun, and The Humans). IMPORTANT NOTE: Students applying to Theatre must apply by the EARLY ACTION DEADLINE (November 1). An alternate major must be selected — if not admitted to Theatre, automatically considered for alternate major.
