About this program
Florida International University's Department of Theatre is located in The Wertheim — a professional theatre venue featuring a 200-seat proscenium theatre, a 90-120 seat black box theatre, cutting-edge scene and costume shops, a design studio, and a light lab stocked with the latest technology. The Department is NAST-accredited (National Association of Schools of Theatre) and is currently in its 52nd season. 'FIU Theatre is uniquely situated in a major global city distinguished by cultural diversity and a vibrant arts scene.' The department produces 4-5 plays a year across genres, historical eras, and styles — all performed, designed, and built by students and faculty. THE GREENHOUSE: A summer new play development series in which three South Florida playwrights are selected for a one-week intensive. ALPHA PSI OMEGA: FIU Theatre has a very active chapter of the national theatre honor society. FOUR DEGREE OPTIONS: BFA IN THEATRE PERFORMANCE: Rigorous professional training in acting technique (Stanislavski, Meisner, Michael Chekhov); voice and movement; stage production; advanced acting and career preparedness. BFA IN MUSICAL THEATRE: 'Designed to prepare students for professional advanced theatre training and performance careers.' Holistic curriculum: Acting 1-4 (Stanislavski, Meisner, Michael Chekhov); Voice and Movement 1-3; Applied Voice (private lessons EVERY SEMESTER); Fundamentals of Music; Piano; Acting the Song; Ballet 1; Jazz 1; Musical Theatre Workshop 1 & 2; Advanced Theatre Studies; Tap; Musical Theatre Dance; Advanced Dance Workshop. Prescreen via Acceptd. BFA IN THEATRE DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY: Portfolio review required. Contact faculty for portfolio requirements. BA IN THEATRE: Open enrollment; no audition required. Transfer students can often graduate in 3 years. Students with acting interest may optionally schedule audition; students with D&T interest should schedule portfolio review. Versatile liberal arts degree.
