The Bachelor of Arts in Music at the College of the Holy Cross is offered through Holy Cross's Department of Music, providing rigorous, sustained training for music majors while welcoming all students to nurture their love of music. Music — as a universal form of human expression — transcends boundaries of language, culture, time, and place. Whether students are interested in classical, popular, or world music, in music of the past or the present, in creating, performing, or simply listening, Holy Cross provides a rich context for engagement with music and the arts. Through the integration of theory, history, global music studies, and performance, the major takes the study of music to an advanced level by focusing on the creation and reception of music in a wide variety of cultural contexts. It is designed to accommodate students with diverse interests and career goals. A minimum of 10 courses is required for the major (additional courses strongly encouraged). Holy Cross is one of just a handful of colleges in the country that has a Balinese Performing Arts Program — students can learn about the rich traditions of Balinese culture by taking Music courses in the gamelan orchestra, performing as part of Holy Cross's Gamelan Gita Sari ensemble. Holy Cross also has a partnership with New England Conservatory (NEC): an accelerated 5-year B.A./M.M. program where Holy Cross students can earn both a Bachelor of Arts from Holy Cross and a Master of Music from NEC, completing the M.M. in one additional year after graduation (up to 12 credits transfer). Holy Cross is the oldest Roman Catholic college in New England (founded 1843 by Benedict Joseph Fenwick, second Bishop of Boston). All Holy Cross degrees are Bachelor of Arts; Holy Cross has 328 faculty teaching ~3,142 undergraduate students.
