BA in Music
College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University — St. Joseph, MN
About this program
The Bachelor of Arts in Music at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University (CSB+SJU) is offered through CSB+SJU's NASM-accredited Music Department, with concentrations in Music Studies, Music Performance, Liturgical Music, Music Composition, and Music Education (Instrumental or Choral, both elementary and secondary, leading to Minnesota K-12 teacher licensure). The CSB+SJU Music Department seeks to deepen students' understanding and appreciation of music through challenging courses, excellent choral and instrumental ensembles, and a comprehensive array of individual studio lessons. Above all, the music department seeks to foster a life-long engagement with the art of music. Performance is at the heart of the music program. Extensive musical opportunities are available for all students on campus regardless of their chosen major. CSB and SJU together form a unique partnership of two leading liberal arts institutions, with an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 3,100 students sharing one combined academic curriculum across both campuses. CSB+SJU was founded by Benedictine communities (CSB by Benedictine sisters; SJU by Benedictine monks of Saint John's Abbey, founded 1857 — Minnesota's oldest continuously operating institution of higher learning). Brian J. Bruess became the first person to serve as president of both institutions in July 2022. The Benedictine tradition places a high value on the role of the fine arts in society, evident in CSB+SJU's superior music facilities. The campuses are located on 3,500 acres of forests, prairies, and lakes; women live at CSB and men live at SJU.
