About this program

Colgate's BA in Theater trains students to integrate analytical, physical, emotional, and interpersonal intelligence through immersion in the creative process. Required coursework covers acting, directing, stagecraft, and stage design, with a minimum of two theater history/dramatic literature courses and two additional elective courses. Majors must participate in at least one University Theater production in any capacity — performer, dramaturg, designer, stage manager, or assistant director — and must complete 40 hours of backstage/technical work beyond coursework requirements (first 20 by end of junior year). Chair is April Sweeney. Faculty include Christian DuComb (Christian A. Johnson Professor of Theater; Associate Dean of the Faculty for Recruitment and Development), Simona Giurgea (playwright and director; writes and directs University Theater productions including original adaptations of Bulgakov and Durnenkov), Adrian Giurgea, Anna Labykina, Benjamin Gillespie, Glenna Ryer, Amy Swanson, Andrew (Andy) Frank, and Kyle Bass. The department produces up to four theater and dance main stage productions per year, each carrying a full course credit. All students regardless of major may audition for productions. The Brehmer Theater (proscenium) hosts up to 10 productions per year; the Little Brehmer provides an intimate black box configuration. Additional venues include the Memorial Chapel (orchestra, a cappella, and Dancefest), Golden Auditorium (150-seat lecture/theater), and the Lory Student Center equivalent spaces. Student organizations include Charred Goosebeak (improv group; has collaborated with Jim Belushi) and Colgate Ballet Company (annual Nutcracker production). Dancefest in the Memorial Chapel is consistently the most popular student event on campus. Senior Honors is available to students with a 3.5+ GPA in theater courses, requiring an honors project (proposal due ~October; thesis/artistic project and oral presentation).
