About this program
Carnegie Mellon's BFA in Drama with a Music Theater concentration is one of the most coveted and selective musical theatre training programs in the world, housed within the oldest drama conservatory in the United States. The program prepares performers for immediate professional careers in musical theater, television, film, and all performance media through an intensive, four-year, sequence-based conservatory curriculum. Music Theater students share the same extensive core curriculum as Acting students — acting, voice and speech, movement, Alexander Technique, theater history, and directing — and additionally receive specialized training in musical theatre technique, singing, and dance throughout all four years. The program emphasizes accumulative skill development, with each year's training building rigorously upon the last. Four semesters of acting and dance are embedded in the core training, and students regularly participate in productions that span the full range of dramatic work produced by the School of Drama. The program produces 14–18 fully realized productions each season in the Purnell Center for the Arts, including full-scale musicals, plays, one-acts, and devised work. All productions are designed by students in the School of Drama's Design concentration. The School of Drama's relationship with the School of Music enables collaboration between Music Theater students and the acclaimed vocal performance, opera, and instrumental programs. CMU Music Theater alumni are performing on Broadway and in major venues around the world. The program culminates in the Actors' Showcase, presenting the graduating class to industry professionals in New York City, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh.
