BA in Theatre Arts: Cross-disciplinary Performance Concentration

California State University-East Bay — Hayward, CA

BATheatre (General)Hayward, CA

About this program

California State University, East Bay offers the BA in Theatre Arts with a Cross-disciplinary Performance Concentration through the Department of Theatre and Dance. This is the most flexible of the four Theatre Arts concentrations (12 units), designed for students whose artistic interests span multiple performance disciplines and who want to build a customized breadth of experience across acting, dance, inclusive performance, musical theatre, and theatrical design rather than focusing deeply on a single area. The department's campus is the most diverse in the CSU system and takes an inclusive, interdisciplinary, and experimental approach to all performance work. Shared BA Core (16 units required of all Theatre Arts majors): Discover Acting, Modern Dance I, Dance Partnering I, Inclusive Interdisciplinary Ensemble, History of Black Theatre, Scenery/Lighting/Sound Design, and Costume and Makeup Design. Shared Core Production and Performance (minimum 8 units, selecting from repeatable courses): Inclusive Interdisciplinary Ensemble Performance, Dance Ensemble Performance, Theatre Performance, Musical Theater Performance, Production Support: Stage/Lights/Sound Shop or Crew, and Production Support: Costume/Makeup Shop or Crew. Capstone (1 unit): Theatre Capstone or Dance Capstone, taken by senior-level students. Cross-disciplinary Performance Concentration (12 units): The 12 concentration units are selected across theatre, dance, and related performance coursework in consultation with an advisor, allowing students to draw from the full breadth of the department's course offerings — spanning acting, directing, devised theatre, musical theatre, dance technique, dance studies, production technology, dramatic literature, and more — and to design an interdisciplinary path that reflects their particular artistic goals. The department produces approximately 5–8 plays and dance concerts per year, has toured 16 productions to four European countries, and mounts annual domestic tours. Facilities include a 450-seat University Theatre, two flexible studio theaters, a spacious dance studio, a scene shop, a costume shop, and a design studio. All faculty are working Bay Area professional artists.
