BA / BS in Theatre Arts
Bradley University — Peoria, IL
About this program
Bradley University's BA/BS in Theatre Arts is a liberal arts performance degree offered through the Department of Theatre Arts in the Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. The department describes itself as a small, intensive, and deeply nurturing student-centered program that trains aspiring theatre artists in performance and production disciplines. The degree comes in two tracks: a general Theatre Arts track and two optional concentrations — Performance and Production — each of which requires a separate audition or portfolio/interview after university acceptance. The Performance concentration provides intensive training in acting technique, voice, movement, and audition preparation, with electives in stage combat, dialects, and acting for the camera, as well as annual advisor reviews to monitor student progress. The Production concentration provides hands-on experience in stagecraft, scenic painting, lighting, costumes, and sound design from the first semester, with opportunities to present work at the USITT annual conference and to participate in Bradley's Las Vegas Excursion working alongside Cirque du Soleil artists and technicians backstage. All three tracks share a core curriculum in acting, script analysis, stagecraft, design, directing or stage management, theatre history, and practicum production assignments. Capstone is the Senior Seminar/Capstone Project (THE 410). The department is located in the Hartmann Center for the Performing Arts, which houses the Meyer Jacobs Theatre (270-seat modified thrust stage with digital lighting and sound) and the Blythe O'Sullivan Studio Theatre (flexible, fully-equipped, named in memory of Bradley alumna Blythe O'Sullivan). Beyond the degree, students may also participate in Bradley's Hollywood Semester program (Los Angeles) and study theatre abroad in London and other locations. The program also offers a complementary major in Entertainment Engineering for students who want to pair theatre production with engineering study.
