About this program

The Bachelor of Arts in Music Education with K-12 Professional Teaching Licensure at Benedictine University prepares students for careers as music educators in private or public elementary, middle, and high schools. The program’s primary objective is to provide a well-rounded liberal arts education combined with the essential conceptual knowledge in music history, music theory, and music performance, plus the technical skills necessary for composing, producing, interpreting, performing, listening, assessing, and teaching music with excellence. The Music Education major leads to the Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) in Music for grades K-12. The program aligns with Benedictine University’s Basic Skills and Distribution Requirements for an undergraduate degree and includes specific course requirements for state licensure. Music Education majors must complete all major courses with a grade of C or better (grades of C- are considered below C and must be retaken). Students need a minimum 2.75 overall GPA and 3.0 major GPA to be eligible for licensure. The majority of licensure requirements are mandated by the Illinois State Board of Education. The Department of Music follows the standards of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Benedictine is an approved Illinois State Board of Education educator licensure provider in Elementary Education, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Music, Science (Biology), Science (Physics), Social Science (History), Spanish, and Special Education. Graduates develop technical skills for composing, producing, interpreting, performing, listening, assessing, and teaching music, and produce a final recital performance with meaningful artistic expression and musical sensitivity.
